DESCRIPTION While in level flight on an interfacility transport, the aircraft lost all console lights. The pilot initiated a return to the sending hospital. Shortly thereafter, the pilot and medical crew noticed the smell of smoke, similar to burning electrical wiring. The pilot performed a precautionary landing in an open farm field. Dispatch notified the other duty aircraft and it was dispatched to transport the patient and medical crew members to receiving hospital. ADDITIONAL INFO Wiring in the overhead circuit breaker panel was found to be chffed resulting in the circuit breaker popping and loss of console lights. The following evening, 11/5/03, at 0130 the aircraft experienced a loss of pilot instrument lighting, later attributed to a failed power supply. A precautionary landing was completed without incident.
