Description:
Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation (formally Carilion Patient

ambulance was transporting non-emergent patient to Carilion Roanoke
Memorial Hospital in Roanoke City, VA. While proceeding through a
traffic light controlled intersection, with a green light, a vehicle
disregarded their redlight and traveled into the intersection. The
CPTS ambulance driver applied the brakes and attempted to turn to
decrease the angle of impact. However, the ambulance was unable to
avoid lateral impact to the vehicle causing significant damage. The
ambulance struck the vehicle squarely in the passenger side front
	door.

The driver of the ambulance was wearing his seatbelt as had been the
attendant in charge (AIC) who was seated in the captain's seat. The
AIC had unbuckled to transition to the bench seat to perform
additional patient assessment. The patient was positioned on the
stretcher with 3 belts and 2 shoulder belts.

The Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation Ground PAIP was activated
by the Communications Center. An additional CCPT Ambulance responded
to the scene with several Roanoke City Fire & EMS vehicles.

The patient, AIC and driver of the other vehicle were transported by
the CCPT unit and a unit from Roanoke City Fire and EMS. The AIC was
treated and released with injuries from striking the bulkhead in back
of the ambulance. The driver of the other vehicle was treated for
injuries. The patient did not have any additional complaints from the
incident. The driver of the ambulance did not sustain injury.

Per the Ground PAIP-Divisional LT., CAPT., Director, Safety Officer,
and Senior Director responded to the scene and receiving hospital.
Carilion Police and Roanoke City Police were on scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was charged with disregarding a red
	light signal.

Additional Info:
Review of the DriveCam ambulance video recording system confirmed the
	above incident, noting the following:

	(1) 7.4 G's forward force & 6.0 G's lateral force
	(2) No additional equipment from the patient compartment was
	unsecured.
	(3) The patient was restrained by the 2 shoulder straps, in addition
	to the 3 regular straps.
	(4) Driver restrained
	(5) AIC sitting in the Captain's seat, not yet transitioning, limited
	movement and potential greater injury.

Preliminary, both vehicles are estimated to be a total loss. All
equipment has been taken to biomed for post-crash evaluation and
stretcher is out of service pending inspection and review.
