[Date Prev][Date Next][Date Index] UMass Memorial Life Flight - Non-injury incidentDate: 11/23/2007 15:08 EST Program: UMass Memorial Life Flight 55 Lake Ave North Worcester Ma. 01655 Type: EC145 Tail #: N145LF Operator/Vendor: Air Methods Weather: Clear. Not a factor Team: Pilot, Flight Nurse, Flight Physician. No injuries reported. No patient. Description: Aircraft was on final to a local hospital helipad which is located in a back parking lot. Pilot just caught sight of an approaching vehicle as he was landing and lost site of the vehicle as he was turning final. The pilot informed the flight nurse to keep an eye on the vehicle. Flight nurse immediately located the vehicle and informed the pilot that it was driving up onto the helipad. Pilot initiated a go around and had communications contact hospital security. Vehicle was secured and landing performed without incident. Additional Info: Helipad is located on hospital grounds in a back parking lot. Landing zone is secured by ambulance personnel and hospital security using traffic cones. Follow-Up Hospital security detained and interviewed the driver of the vehicle. Driver admitted that he was on a cell phone and did not notice the cones or the people trying to wave him off. Hospital security to reposition cones and barriers to prevent vehicles from accessing the landing zone while in use.
